A new hydroponic garden is being developed at Nicuesa Lodge to grow fresh vegetables and herbs for our delicious, original Costa Rican meals served in our restaurant.

The concept of hydroponics or “soil-less” gardening has been around for thousands of years. The word hydroponics comes from the Greek words “hydro” meaning water, and “ponics” which means labor.

Hydroponics is known to offer several advantages over soil gardening: a 30-50 percent faster growth rate, higher yield, less water used, and fewer problems with bug infestations, fungus and disease. Hydroponic growing mediums provide extra oxygen, which helps to stimulate root growth and allow plants to absorb nutrients faster. Hydroponically-grown plants also require very little energy to find and break down food since the nutrients in a hydroponic system are mixed with water and sent directly to the root system. The plant then uses this saved energy to grow faster and to produce more. Continue reading

Located in southern Costa Rica, Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge is only accessible by boat on the gulf of Golfo Dulce, where it borders the remote Piedras Blancas National Park. To get there, you can either drive or fly to either the towns of Puerto Jimenez or Golfito. Golfo Dulce Open Water Crossing event!

In it’s 4th consecutive year, we are sponsoring one of the most important nature-sports competitions taking place in Golfo Dulce: the Open Water Competition: Sept. 3-4, 2016. The “Cruce de Aguas Abiertas Golfo Dulce” is a 14k route which will have its starting point at Nicuesa; then crosses the gulf and finishes at Pto. Jimenez. We are proud to host this challenging competition and be it’s starting point for the 2nd consecutive year. Inscriptions to participate end on the 25th of August. Golfito and other towns in the southern region of Costa Rica by Playa Nicuesa Rainforest Lodge will host one of the country’s largest festivals of the arts over 10 days in August.

Usually held in the capital city of San Jose, the 26th annual Costa Rica National Festival of the Arts 2016 (FNA16) will take place August 5 to 14 in Golfito and Ciudad Neily, along with eight other communities in southern Costa Rica. With over 250 events and activities featuring more than 600 artists of all kinds, it is the largest annual arts festival in Costa Rica, and one of the largest in Central America.
